Mark Nightingale & Callum Au – The Sound of J&K

Wednesday July 3

Mark Nightingale
& Callum Au
– The Sound of J&K

Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, Soho, London

Featuring Mark Nightingale and Callum Au, two of the major award- winning forces in British jazz trombone playing today, this line-up is reminiscent of the fabulous melodic swinging groups of the 1950’s and 60’s led by J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding

The pairing of two jazz musicians has, only rarely created a unique and pleasing sound that becomes instantly recognisable, achieving long-lasting acclaim from fans and critics alike.

When in 1945 J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding paired up for a new quintet there were those who though a two-trombone front-line simply wouldn’t work. How wrong they were!

The Jay and Kai Quintet was an instant hit. Over many subsequent years right through until 1983, this duo produced a wealth of recorded material than stands the test.

The repertoire of music being performed in this Dean Street concert, by Mark Nightingale and Callum Au, includes some J&K classics as well as other standards and originals given the uniquely refreshing and appealing two-trombone treatment.

It’s a jazz trombone tour-de-force that will have your toes tapping and your face smiling!

Here’s  Mark in full flow

And just around the corner here’s Callum

It was such a treat to hear two of the UK’s best trombonists play in the style of the classic J&K band.  The harmonies and counter melodies were brilliant and the solos very exciting – there’s an obvious synergy in the band too.  Well worth booking!” Ian Pennicott, Director Teignmouth Jazz Festival
