Sarah Vaughan - 9.15pm Show

DOUBLE HEADER — 2 SHOWS

At Crazy Coqs, Brasserie Zedel, Sherwood Street, Soho, London

Flying in from Los Angeles for the much-awaited start of her fourth European tour, it’s a warm welcome to Angie Wells, the outstanding young American jazz and blues singer, choosing Crazy Coqs and London to open her tour, performing the music of one of the world's greatest singers – Sarah Vaughan

Angie Wells, with a smoky voice, reminiscent of the great Betty Carter, grew up in a home filled with great music. Her mother sang and played gospel piano. Her father was a jazz lover, and his records were heard on any day in her childhood home. The music of Sarah Vaughan was a regular feature.

Angie began her singing career in an intimate little supper club in St. Germain des Pres in Paris when she joined the trio playing that night for a few tunes. The audience's explosive applause encouraged her to begin training to sing professionally. She won the New Talent Competition at the final Sweet n' Hot Jazz Festival in Los Angeles and qualified as a semifinalist for the 1st Annual Indaba Music Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.

Angie's smokey well rounded voice can give listeners goosebumps on a ballad or blues and then turn around to have them tapping their feet when she swings. She will give our Crazy Coqs audiences “a real show" in the true sense of the phrase with great songs, brilliantly sung interspersed with humorous banter, giving everything on the stage.

Angie’s latest album “Truth Be Told” was a Grammy consideration as Best Jazz Vocal Album 2023

Nicknamed "Sassy" and "The Divine One"", Sarah Vaughan won two Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and was nominated for a total of nine Grammy Awards. She was given an NEA Jazz Masters Award in 1989.

Critic Scott Yanow wrote that she had "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century"

Among the many great Sarah Vaughan songs that Angie will perform at Crazy Coqs will be gems including “"Cheek To Cheek”,Misty”,”Old Devil Moon”, ”Stardust”,”Tenderly”,”The More I See You”, and many more.

Sit back and enjoy Angie giving voice to Dave Frishberg’s sardonic song “Peel Me A Grape” – just delicious!
